Welcome to Animations!
Animations is a quarterly online magazine run by the Puppet Centre Trust. It is a voice for contemporary puppetry and related arts, offering discussion and debate, reviews, and news from the puppet community and elsewhere. It’s an essential read for anyone interested in puppetry in all its diverse manifestations. Animations Online aims to represent the full spectrum of professional practice, from traditional puppetry to experimental visual theatre using puppetry or animation.

In this ‘silver jubilee’ edition, we bring you a mix of features, reviews, and news that reflects our commitment to puppetry of all sorts.

In The Visionaries, come with us to meet Joseph Seelig and  Helen Lannaghan, directors of the London International Mime Festival.

In The Rod and The String, the third of our intermittent series of articles on puppetry forms and modes of practice, Penny Francis reflects on the history of the marionette.

We also feature a tribute to Ken Campbell, who sadly died in September 2008, in which we reprint Ken’s guide to vent speak, Thentriloquisn Ngade Singkle, (originally written for Animations in Print Vol 1).

Our Company Profile is of Rod Burnett’s company Storybox.

From the Frontline is an excerpt from the ‘Emotional’ diary of ‘Naked Puppeteer’ Mark Down of Blind Summit, who recently collaborated with writer/director Mick Gordon on a production for Soho Theatre

The Reviews section brings reports of recently seen performance work, books, films – and an exhibition by the Quay Brothers.

The News and Noticeboard section is the place to read about the current and future plans of puppeteers and puppet-theatre companies, and to catch up on other news, events and opportunities.

The Editor’s Letter celebrates another milestone for Animations.

As always, your feedback is very welcome. Deadline for the spring 2009 edition is 14 February.
We look forward to hearing your news, views and suggestions for future content.
